Boring Home Accessories: Creative Touches to Brighten Up Everyday Objects
By Lisa Koosis Whether it’s an ordinary, bland-looking serving tray or a boring wooden accent table, or maybe plain old picture frames that don’t do your favorite photos any justice, most homes have their fair share of items that could use a creative touch. Don’t fret. With a little creative energy and some imagination, you can brighten up those bland household accessories in no time at all. So why not - Decoupage them! Wooden accent tables, picture frames, even serving trays make wonderful surfaces for decoupage techniques. Decoupage, or the craft of transforming an item using pieces of paper, is an easy technique to learn, and a great way to brighten up boring items. Choose festive papers such as scraps of gift wrap, colorful tissue paper, or even magazine clippings. For a special accent table or serving tray, why not use special photographs rather than paper. You won’t need much else — just a paintbrush and a bottle of Mod Podge (a multi-purpose fluid that serves as sealer, glue and finisher all in one). For decorating pieces to go in a child’s room, decoupage is particularly wonderful because you can select photos or pictures with special meaning for your child. You can even add fun and funky stickers to your project design. And why not ask your child to help pick out materials and work together with you on the project? For those unfamiliar with decoupage, pull up your internet search engine of choice and do a keyword search using the words “decoupage how-to” to find specific instructions for this craft. - Pretty it up with paint! Just about any household item can benefit from a colorful coat of paint. You can choose your colors to match or complement your room’s dcor, or add a splash of pizzazz with an unexpected color choice. Those who have an artistic bent might want to view your item of choice as a blank canvas. Go ahead and paint something one of a kind and wonderful. - Great mosaics. Most wooden surfaces make ideal canvases for mosaic techniques. There’s nothing like bright pieces of tile or glass to jazz up jazzing up a boring wooden tabletop or serving tray. Or why not try sea glass or smooth river rocks? Your favorite craft supplier should have the supplies you need and will be able to provide direction for your project as well. - Hot glue it! Rummage for old buttons and bows. Dig out baubles such as broken jewelry and scavenge for useful parts. Then hot glue them to picture frames and baskets and plain wooden boxes. The possibilities are as vast as your imagination. If you’re feeling particularly bold, go ahead and combine some of these techniques. Just dust off your sense of creative adventure and find a few household pieces in need of a little TLC, and with minimal effort, you can have something you’ll be proud to showcase in your home.
